Car hire at Ibiza Airport
Car hire is by far the most popular service at Ibiza Airport, after the airport itself. It makes sense: the island is too big to get around by bus, the coves in the north and west aren’t served by the AERO bus route, and demand is concentrated into just three months of the season.
The companies’ counters are at the terminal itself, in the arrivals area, and Aena publishes a list of those with an office there. There are also operators ‘outside the terminal’ who collect passengers by shuttle bus: these are usually cheaper but take between twenty minutes and half an hour longer.
What really determines the price
Four things that, at Ibiza, have a greater impact on the final price than the daily rate:
- The franchise. A low price almost always comes with a high excess — the amount that is blocked on your card and which you lose if you make a claim. Reducing this at the counter is where these companies make their money.
- Fuel policy. ‘Full-empty’ means you pay the full deposit at the price they set and get back whatever you don’t spend… or not. Look for ‘full-full’.
- Parking at your destination. In July and August, parking at Eivissa, Sant Antoni or in the northern coves is a real problem, and many coves have a limited number of parking spaces. Driving isn’t always the most convenient option.
- Return time. If your flight leaves in the early hours, check that the check-in desk is open at that time: not all of them are open during the off-season.
